New Delhi, Dec 21 : Christmas came early for a group of 30 underprivileged children living in a shelter home here as they were gifted warm clothes by the police and shopkeepers to brave the winter chill. The shelter home, run by NGO Chetna, was visited by a team of police officers from Lajpat Nagar police station along with ten shopkeepers Sunday.
The children were given jackets, caps, blankets, shoes etc. as Christmas gifts. ”Delhi Police are concerned about the city’s street children. We distributed the warm clothes to provide comfort to these children,” said Rakesh Kumar Singh, additional station house officer.
According to another police officer, the children were made aware about their rights and how to protect themselves and take police’s help in case they find themselves in a precarious situation. According to Sanjay Gupta, director of NGO Chetna, around 70 more children will be provided warm clothes Monday.
“This is part of our ongoing efforts to help homeless children. We will provide warm clothing to many more children in the days to come,” said Gupta. ”We want people to join us in our movement to save the street children,” he said.
